Certified Specialist – Donald Crowell

An Arizona attorney must meet the following minimum standards for Specialization in Personal Injury and Wrongful Death:

Admission to the practice of law for at least five (5) years
Admission to the State Bar of Arizona for at least two (2) years immediately preceding submission of the application
Devotion of at least 50% of a full-time practice to the specialty area
Substantial involvement in the certification area for four to six of the years immediately preceding submission of the application
A full peer review is conducted and a written examination must be passed.

Donald R. Crowell is a litigation attorney with Accident Law Group. He has exclusively represented injured victims in Arizona since 1976. He spent much of his early career on his own, followed by 15 years supervising the litigation department of a prominent Arizona law firm before joining Accident Law Group. He is certified by the State Bar of Arizona as a Specialist in Personal Injury and Wrongful Death Litigation, a distinction earned by a small percentage of qualified attorneys. Don is a true Arizona native having been born, raised, and educated in Tucson, Arizona. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona with a double major in history and government. In edition, he received his certification in secondary education (high school teacher). Don also attended law school at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law.

Don has been happily married to his wife, Robin, a retired school teacher, for almost 44 years. Together they have a son and a daughter and two wonderful grandchildren. Don and Robin are avid supporters of Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Ryan House, and various animal welfare organizations.

Community Outreach

Joseph Brown

Joseph Brown currently serves on the Phoenix Dance Cooperative Board of Directors as well as the Ahwatukee YMCA (since 2010). He is also a passionate supporter of various organizations including Phoenix Children’s Hospital, St. Mary’s Food Bank, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Goodwill and more.

Joseph is very passionate about supporting youth in the community he lives in which includes sponsoring various athletic clubs at Desert Vista High School and other East Valley schools.

The Phoenix Dance Cooperative is a structured, not-for-profit organization founded by parents of dancers. The driving force behind the organization is to provide high quality dance instruction with a focus on competition as a group, while fostering a loving environment with a strong sense of community.

The YMCA is one of the oldest and largest non-profits in Arizona. Through its many initiatives, programs, and services, the Y helps youth realize their potential; teens and young adults prepare for college; families spend time and have fun together; people are healthier in mind, body, and spirit; job seekers prepare for employment; newcomers are welcome and embraced; a nationwide service ethic is fostered; and so much more.

Carl Engstrand

Carl Engstrand has been donating blood regularly since 2007. One blood donation can save up to three lives. Blood is always in demand and so simple to give. Carl has successfully organized semi-annual blood drives at Accident Law Group in Tempe since 2016. Everyone at ALG has now become vigilant about donating blood regularly, thanks to Carl.

According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation.

Donating blood since 2007. One blood donation can save up to three lives and blood is always in demand. Carl has lead a semi-annual blood drive for the Tempe office location since 2016.

Robert Shely

Bob Shely and his wife, fellow attorney Lynda Shely, contribute regularly to a number of charitable or educational organizations, including their alma matter, Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where they sit on the Leadership Counsel. Franklin & Marshall College is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States with roots going back to Franklin College which was founded in 1787 with a generous donation from Benjamin Franklin.

They have supported the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law and the United Way of the Valley of the Sun. They also support such charities such as the ASPCA and KJZZ (Local NPR).

In addition, Mr. Shely is a member of the Advisory Council for U.S. Vets-Phoenix. U.S. Vets provides housing, employment and counseling services to our nations veterans from all branches of the armed forces. U.S.VETS personnel go into the local community to find homeless veterans and guide them to crucial services that might help alleviate the challenges they face as a result of their homelessness. The range of services includes housing and employment assistance, as well as access to veterans benefits and treatment for mental and physical health problems and substance abuse.

Wet Floor Sign: Why Proper Signs Are Important

If you know one thing about businesses and premises liability law, it’s that a property owner could be held liable for your accident if they do not keep their property safe from all harm. The same can be said for stores, which are supposed to be free from all harm because of the many people who utilize their property every day so that they can obtain the goods that mean the most to them. When you walk into an establishment and there are slippery floors, you, like every other American, expects to see Wet Floor signs to warn people that there is a slippery condition there. But what happens when there are no signs and you slip and fall in this condition, gaining a serious injury? You may wonder if you can hold a store liable for not warning you about the condition.

Why Proper Wet Floor Signs Are So Important

Commercial establishments owe a duty of care to those who utilize their store. This means that they should protect them from harm in many ways, such as stairways that need rail adjustments or when there is loose carpet on the floor that somebody could trip over. Part of this duty of care includes using wet floor signs, which show that the area around there is slippery. Perhaps this is due to the fact that somebody just spilled something and they are waiting for an employee to clean the floor, or because they have just mopped all the floors in the store and there is one section just waiting to dry.

However, there is one exception to this rule.

What happens if the spill just happened and nobody said anything to an employee about it? If the spill just happened and a person standing right there came and slipped on it, then the store might not be liable because they didn’t have enough time to figure out that anything was wrong. Sometimes, when employees or management didn’t have enough time to discover the condition, the same liability rules would not apply. However, if the spill was there for many hours already, then there is a reason to believe that the employees had enough time to discover that something was wrong on that part of the floor.

What if somebody saw multiple employees stepping around that area, clearly noticing the adverse condition on the floors, but still failed to put down wet floor signs to signal that there was a condition that could cause them harm? If you had evidence of this, you could hold the store liable for your injuries because they failed to act. It is not uncommon to suffer from a variety of injuries in these cases such as sprained and bruised muscles or ligaments, whiplash, fractured bones, head injuries, and more.
